cool gadget with quantum of gripe
I have it for 3 days now and my battery has not been charged. I go to school so you can imagine the use frequency.
Don’t expect it as fast as regular laptops. also the small screen is not suited for certain word processing softwares. that is the compromise!
the LCD is extremely sharp, close to iMac to my judgement.
the fan does run all the time!! This should be fixed by Acer immediately.
If this is going to be flawless.

I have done some research on various mini-laplop models (including the HP 2133, Asus Eee, MSI Wind, and IBM’s IdeaPad) prior to purchasing the Acer Aspire One. I chose this model based on its portability and the availability of the 6-cell battery option. So far I am very happy with my decision.
First with some technical, the unit weighs 2.8 lb (the one I bought was the 160 GB HDD; 6 cell model with Windows XP). The Acer was proloaded with lots of key programs (IE, Adobe Acrobat reader, DVD player. Microsoft works and office (trial version)) which allowed me to get off running rather quickly. I prefer using Firefox which is faster than IE with nice Zoom functions for displaying on a small size PC. There are two display modes (1024 x 600 and 800 x 600) which actually works quite well with the applications. The boot up time after I have loaded all the essential programs is about 90 secs. Not bad for someone who wakes up in the morning and wanted to check news, emails and stocks prices quickly before he decided if he wants to get out of bed :-). The Wifi works very well with my home wireless network for surfing and watching youtube. There is a slot for wireless SIM card but the connector was not installed. It would have been nice to have it for true on-the-road surfing.
What I find values on the Acer is that it is a good compromise between a heavy, slow booting laptop and the small iTouch I normally used for checking news and emails in the morning. I also use it for reading Word and PDF document on the go. This is much better than using the Kindle as the Kindle does not format these document well for reading. I have also converted my DVD movies to WMA format for watching movies on-to-go. The long battery life also allows me to use it while on a long trip.
The performance is not great for serious applications. However, I could use the Acer to connect to my main PC at home using remote access program such as LogmeIn to run serious applications remotely.
All in all.. for the price, this is a great gadget that I would use and play with.
Simply AWESOME little laptop!!!
I originally purchased a competitor’s solid state netbook with flash only storage. I wanted a small, lightweight device for travel. While this device was handy for surfing, (which is what these are really designed for anyway), it was too slow and had inadequate memory for anything else. Another problem was its 7" screen which caused a horizontal scroll bar on web pages.
I sold that machine to a friend and ordered the Aspire One with its 160GB disk. This little pc is simply amazing! It seems to run almost as well as my desktop! I have loaded pics, pic mgt software, as well as ms office and it runs like a champ. I’m confident that the average business user would have no complaints with word docs, spreadsheets, and email. The battery life is extremely long- longer than any laptop I’ve ever seen. The machine seems to be solidly built- and the built-in mouse pad is actually useable!
I, of course, don’t know what you’re looking for- but for me, the Aspire One is the bomb! Probably one of the best purchases I have made in a long time. I give it 5+ STARS !!!!!!
