Game of the year or closestar50 tpng Gears of War 2
Gears of War 2 holds the distinction of being not only the thing that made me give in and invest in an Xbox 360 but also became the first game that I ever bought for it. Like Metal Gear Solid 4 or Zelda: Twilight Princess, the game seemed like a worthy enough reason to shell out the big bucks for a new machine and while I still hold the first game in a higher light in terms of small things, it’s kind of hard to be a 360 owner and not think about getting this one and while it does do a couple of things that irk me, it’s still filled with great moments one after another.

Story: Taking place a few months after the first game, the Lightmass bomb the team detonated in Locust territory didn’t completely rid the threat and even made it worse since entire cities have been sinking into the ground and sending in bigger and more fortified waves of enemies so it’s up to Marcus, Dom, Baird and Cole as well as some new characters to take the fight to the Locust and end the war while Dom tries to find his missing wife, Maria in the middle of all this.
One thing that fills the story right from the start is huge moments where it really does feel like you’re in a much bigger fight and from vehicle sections to frequent encounters with big enemies, there’s a lot of grandiose set pieces. However, my one complaint is that whereas the first half is stellar in its pacing and moments, the second half kind of lurches on with some notable moments but it feels padded or lengthened simply for the sake of making it longer than Gears 1 and not an integral reason to be that long. But it’s a bit more emotional and deeper (well, for a Gears game I mean) and it makes it a more interesting ride to take.

Graphics: When it comes down to next-gen graphics and the best they can offer, the first Gears was also touted as one of the finest examples of detail and graphical power thanks to the Unreal Engine. Gears 2 by contrast amps it up with more sharper character animations, bigger set pieces with a lot more enemies on screen, better lighting (one tunnel section early on looked fantastic) and can easily be some of the best graphics of this year.

Sound/Music: Doing the score this time around is Steve Jablonsky who did the score for Transformers and since it’s fitting, we have bigger, epic music fit for a Hollywood blockbuster with the larger battles having appropriately bombastic music. The voice acting is pretty much the same: well delivered, a bit more depth but hit-and-miss in its writing which can make some moments ring wrong or one liners that aren’t as funny as intended but I like the more darker story and getting a bit more depth into it.

Gameplay: Much hasn’t changed since the original. You still take cover, popping up occasionally to fire your weapon, revive fallen teammates and having 3 weapons to choose from as well as your grenades. But there’s been some improvements and you won’t get brought into cover when you didn’t want to and is a lot less cumbersome than it was before. As far as your teammates are concerned, it’s vastly improved and they’ll take cover when they need to, use weapons better and is actually useful in battle. However, occasionally they’ll stand around while me and the other guy battles and in one section involving 2 turrets, he doesn’t even bother manning the other one and instead just stands there. A little help?
There’s been some new weapons as well from the mulcher, a mini-gun you can carry around that all but tears into enemies, a mortar launcher which initially is tricky to use since it uses distance in metres rather than the Hammer of Dawn which used specific targeting areas but the smackdown it provides is satisfying. Oh and the flamethrower is a lot more useful than Dead Space’s and cooking enemies in the campaign or multiplayer is just pure bad***ness. The active reload is still back with faster reloading and better damage should you press reload at the white or grey part on the bar which after Gears 1 was so natural and immediate I got the 30 successful reload achievement within a few chapters.
As for multiplayer, it’s still as fun with several modes such as twists to the standard Team Deathmatch and specific objectives like Execution kills only (the foot stomp is satisfaction guaranteed) or territory control similar to capture the flag. The big draw is Horde mode which acts strangely to the dungeons in Legend of Zelda games where you go several floors with enemies getting stronger only this time it’s different waves. It’s basically you against the enemy for 50 rounds and every 10 they get deadlier and it’s a blast. However, getting into the matches is a pain with a long matchmaking process, than the initial loading, then you got to vote on what arena to go on, pick your character and default weapon (having the LE I naturally use my Gold Lancer) than go into the actual match and should you lose host connection than that’s practically 5 minutes wasted and is incredibly frustrating and makes me long for the quick setups provided by Call of Duty and Resistance.
For those with the LE, you get flashback maps which have been graphically upgraded, a Gold trial as well as the aforementioned Gold Lancer. Included is a cool artbook with a foreword by Cliff Bleszinski and some quotes from the game and backstory, a making-of DVD and a cool photo keepsake made to look like the one Dom shows people in the game (though strangely it’s smaller than his) and like a lot of special editions, it’s maybe not an absolute must buy but having all the extra stuff kind of makes the whole thing more special. As for the game itself, it’s a must-play. While the main campaign goes a bit too long for me, having co-op with adjustable difficulty for your character only (useful for the Insane players with a Casual co-op partner) as well as the multiplayer modes will have you playing for quite some time.

Better than the originalstar50 tpng Gears of War 2
I was a big fan of the original Gears of War and, like any sequel, you wonder if it will be as good as the original or if you’re a pessimist, what they’ll screw up. The good news is that everything that was great in the original is even better in the sequel. Gears of War has longer play time than the original and the combat is more intense and fierce. Co-op mode through the campaign mode is extremely fun, especially using the most difficult game settings.
The maps are very detailed and graphically beautiful, the challenges of the game run from very easy to nearly impossible and their are several interesting scenarios throughout the campaign. I like that the creators of the game didn’t fall into the same predicable rut of having one boss character to beat in order to win the game, rather, there are several lesser bosses to beat throughout the game.
As with the original Gears of War, the most interesting aspect of the game is the online play with friends and others. There are several new online modes of play, my favorite being "horde" – where your team fights wave after wave of computer controlled opponents. Highly addictive and challenging.
If you were a fan of the original Gears of War, go out and pick up Gears of War 2 today!

Decent, but nothing outstanding.star30 tpng Gears of War 2
I’ll go ahead and say it now — I wasn’t a huge fan of the original Gears of War, and I’m not a huge fan of this one.
Graphics-wise, this game is pretty good, although the washed-out color schemes get old after a while. Don’t expect much to have changed aside from the slight graphics improvements and a couple new weapons.
The weapon design, character design, level design, etc. is too generic. ‘Variety’ in the guns is limited, bullets move about as fast as cars (instead of bullets), grenades blow up with the force of an M-80, and your aiming reticule wobbles around, annoyingly resistant to actually targeting what you want to target.
I’ve played the Halo games all on maximum sensitivity, and this is something totally different. It’s not the sensitivity, but response that needs retooling. Even on a ‘low’ setting, where the reticule crawls around, you’re frustrated by the way your aim will sweep right over targets.
The music is annoying, voice acting is silly, ‘cinematic’ elements and ‘plot’ lines are pretty laughable, and there are some seriously corny (though unintended) elements in the game, like Dizzy, the ol’ timer with a cowboy hat who hand-repairs his broken mega-tank in about fifteen seconds while under mortar fire. I half expected a yeeeee-haw! from him as he got his ‘Betty’ working again… though Dizzy did give me a laugh when he hollered "I’m on your back like a buttcrack!"
A final complaint I have — there’s no challenge! This game isn’t challenging so much as tedious. In GoW2, your options are a) hide behind a wall and pick off enemies, or b) hide behind another wall and pick off enemies. Yes, there are lots of them, but they’re all the same guy, same tactics, same weapon. Maybe there are a couple different types, but they all look and act the same. So you gotta hide behind a wall. And pick ‘em off. Then go to the next wall. And pick more off.
Sorry for the repetitive writing, but that’s what this game is — repetitive.
Still, the graphics are pretty, the game is semi-entertaining, and this should be fun for people who aren’t picky about their video games. It’s a generic title with gore, third-person perspective, and a ‘game of the year’ predecessor to buoy its sales.
If you’re considering this and weren’t a huge fan of the first, I’d say… play a friend’s copy, or give this a rent first. I wasn’t too impressed and would warn you to check it out before you drop all that cash on what is, in my opinion, a mediocre game.
If you’re looking more for campaign than multiplayer, I’d suggest taking a look at Dead Space. Weapons, story, graphics, gameplay, music, and suspense are all of much higher quality than those in GoW2. Different style, but still gory and plays like a third-person shooter. Worth the shot over this game.
